Hey guys! We want to announce our project Chipper Cash - A platform to enable simple frequent peer to peer microtransactions amongst users in African countries, starting with Ghana.
Chipper Cash is a financial platform that takes advantage of Stellar technology to remove the fragmentation in payment systems within and between countries in the developing world. We utilize the pervasiveness of mobile money technology and the efficiency of the Stellar network to provide quick and seamless payment processes.
Ever since we discovered Stellar and the core of the mission behind Stellar.org, we knew that this is platform that we felt most in line with so we decided to bet on this and build the core of our wallet here.
How does it work?
Sign up flow is very similar to Square Cash. A user signs up with their phone number, fills registration forms and now can send money to any other phone number registered on the platform.
We are issuing assets in the native countries we support (Ghana Cedis to begin with but later on Nigerian Naira, Ugandan Shillings etc down the line as we expand and get regulated in those countries). A user can then send/request for money to another user's phone number and these transactions happen on chain on Stellar.
The user does not know that these transactions are occurring on Stellar, all she knows is, I just sent 5 Ghana Cedis to my uncle. Or I just received a request for 10 Ghana Cedis from Leslie.
We want to keep to true open protocol nature of Stellar such that, other 3rd party wallets that build on top of Stellar could also send money to anyone's Chipper wallet (and vice versa) regardless of whether these people know what Stellar is. (Eg. Not many people know what POP3/IMAP protocols are but pretty much everyone can send email from hotmail to yahoo to gmail)
For our first version - In order to cash in/cash out, our users can link their various mobile money wallets to their chipper accounts, and as such this provides some sort of interoperability amongst mobile money networks all over. You can think of a linked mobile money account the same way you’d think of linking your bank account to your square cash/Venmo account.
Current Work
Currently building a web app so we can iterate, experiment and gather feedback faster but we will be building native iOS/Android apps and possibly a USSD app for our users who run on only feature phones.
