How many Stellar accounts are there?

I find this number to be very interesting, but then again if you can't proliferate accounts for free (account balance minimums), and most of the XLM is circulating among whale-like entities, and most individuals leave their investments on-exchange, then that number is believable to me at this point in popularity.

It would help if personal wallet software was at all on par with Electrum or other more mature crypto currency wallets.

SELECT COUNT(*) FROM accounts gives you the exact number of existing accounts. As for me, 100K accounts looks more then impressive. However, that's an indicative metric, almost 50-80% of the accounts are inactive (store only minimum reserved balance) and not performing any transactions or trades.
