Launching the First Stellar Federation Service

Today we are happy to announce the launch the BETA of the world's first community-focused Stellar federation service that is 100% free to use, Superlumen.

What's a Federation Service?

The federation service makes your Stellar account ID accessible and user-friendly. Supporting wallets will automatically resolve your custom Superlumen address to your Stellar Account ID.

For example, instead of sending Stellar assets to:

GCPKGZKZHEBQNQRH2HTNJKRDAZDGCNQAFVYR27U6MJ67PLMSCFCET6B6

you can send to:

{your-alias}*superlumen.org

Where "{your-alias}" is the name you are able to claim.

We also decided to add a bit of spice to the game. Once you've claimed your alias, it'll work on all of the following domains, allowing you to choose an address that best fits the transaction:

For everything:

*superlumen.cash
*superlumen.exchange
*superlumen.money

For raising money:

*superlumen.tips
*superlumen.gratis
*superlumen.gift(s)
*superlumen.help

For fun:

This name resolution works for any Stellar network: Test, Live, or a custom network such as a business internal setup.

Security

Security is our #1 concern. Without going into much detail, we can say that we are taking every step we can to ensure a secure and quality experience for all participants. However, this is a BETA release, we may discover vulnerabilities or weaknesses during the course of the BETA that must be addressed.

Like most things, there is an element of risk using this service. ALWAYS be sure to have the sender confirm the address resolved from your alias is accurate. Never give away your password. We will be launching additional security measures over the next few months, including 2-factor authentication. Although this service works on any Stellar network (live, test, etc.), we recommend using it only for test until the BETA is complete.

ICO Announcement

In addition to launching Stellar's first community federation service, we are launching an official Superlumen (SLM) FREE ICO on March 1st. Superlumens are a new token (Stellar Asset) for the Stellar Distributed Exchange that are used by our team to indicate community interest in particular features, products, and services offered or planned by our organization, similar to "liking" a post on social media. They will allow you to "vote" for features and projects that are part of our project initiative agenda.

Congrats on the launch! Services like this that make the network easier to use are definitely needed to help increase adoption.

One of the concerns I have about federation right now is that it's completely up to the client to handle the lookup and transaction. If I tell someone to send lumens to rbates*superlumen.org it's incumbent upon me to make sure the sender is using a trusted client that's implemented the protocol correctly.

I know we'll get there eventually, it's not like people using web browsers have to worry if their DNS lookup will succeed right? But even then, you can't always trust DNS (see blackwallet.io)

It would be great if this metadata could be built into the protocol - at least something more akin to SMTP where the client doesn't handle the lookups and instead just gets notified of failures.

Anyway, I still think you all are doing the right thing by rolling this out. We've got to keep building solutions to hammer all these details out if we want Stellar to achieve broader consumer adoption.

Completely agree with your points about the federation service. We will be working to implement some digital signatures into the platform that can be potentially leveraged to verify name, account ID, and also the federation anchor via DNS... Hopefully in concert w/ the SDF's own federation platform so that the security model can be standardized. For now in beta, it's an extra step but we can only improve on the level of trust!

Right on. I went through the sign-up process. Couple of initial comments.

12 char password might be overkill. Unless you're using LastPass or something I doubt anyone could come up with a 12 char password, let alone remember it.
The input field for alias doesn't look like an input. It took me 3 tries clicking on 'Claim' before I figure it out. Just make it a form field like the one for addess. https://imgur.com/a/0Vvg8

rbates We've updated the input field to be more pronounced. In addition, to alleviate password pressure we'll be adding oauth login for Google+ and Twitter (more will be coming).
