Mini guide on multisig with Interstellar.

Stellar itself has more advanced multisig features, but this guide is limited to what is possible inside the Interstellar app.

Multisig

Multisig Account

Multisig is a great way to secure your account from theft and loss, by requiring multiple signatures to approve any transaction.

Multisig accounts on Interstellar follow the M of N pattern:

  • M represents the minimum number of signers required to validate a transaction.
  • N represents the total number of signers available to validate a transaction.

E.g a 2 of 3 multisig account means you have 3 available signers, but only two are required to validate a transaction. A multisig account doesn't need permission to accept funds ?.

Best Practices

By default, Interstellar accounts don't have multisig. This might be dangerous for companies or holders of large funds. If your private key gets lost or stolen, you lose all funds.

1 of 2 multisig accounts are not generally recommended. They will reduce the risk of loss, but will unfortunately increase the risk of theft. If one of the signers has his/her key stolen, the attacker can gain control of the account.

2 of 2 multisig accounts are not generally recommended. They will reduce the risk of theft, but will unfortunately also increase the risk of loss. If one of the signers loses his/her key, the account will be locked forever.

2 of 3 multisig accounts are recommended. They will reduce the risk of theft and also reduce the risk of loss. If one of the signers loses his/her key, the other two signers can continue signing and even replace the lost key with a new key.

In general, we recommend (N/2 + 1 ):N multisig accounts. That is, just a little bit above half of the available signers should be required.

Setup Multisig Accounts

Setup Multisig

To set up a multisig account:

  • Click on the hamburger menu on the top left.
  • Select Multisig
  • Select the account you want to transform to multisig.
  • Input the number of required signatures.
  • Input the number of available signature.
  • Input the public keys of the signers.
  • And you're done.

Multisig Transactions

Multisig Transactions

Transactions on a multisig account are done the same you'd perform any normal operation.

For example, to send funds from a multisig account to any another account, simply go to the send form and input the destination's address.

The difference however, is that your transactions don't confirm immediately. Instead, each of the available signers are notified that they have pending transactions to sign.

Multisig notifications appear in red on the top right corner of the screen. When you click on a multisig notification, you will see the list of pending requests available for you to sign. The signers are then given a choice to either accept or reject the transaction.

Suppose you had a 2 of 3 multisig account. If 1 signer rejected the transaction, and 2 users accepted the transaction, the transaction will still be validated.

Another quick update:

    Hi guys.
Another Interstellar update. This time, on our Send Form.
Interstellar now supports account_merge, checks for memos on popular exchanges that require memos, and also shows the reserve XLM on your account.
Account merges are detected automatically. And users are informed about the potential risks involved when merging accounts.
Let me know if you find any bugs.

Hello, how secure is Interstellar.exchange? I opened account and next days I found somebody did two payments from my account:
Create Account. Sent 80.001 XLM to GDX2U.
    Payment. Amount: 9 XLM . GAU7C → GC4KA.
How it is possible? Any chance to track it and return 90 XLM back?
What to do now in this situation? To close account?

      Hi TonyG
Interstellar stores your private keys encrypted with your password on your browser's localstorage. We do not store or use your secret keys anywhere else.

What device did you use to create your account?
Did you create a new account on Interstellar, or did you import secret keys from somewhere else?
Did you store your secret keys anywhere else?
Did you import multiple accounts ? (Maybe you are seeing notifications for transactions from another account).

If you fear your account has been compromised, I suggest you transfer your funds to a new stellar account.

Maybe your device itself is compromised. There are two ways to secure your next new account. You can either use a hardware wallet, or use multisig (we recommend 2 of 3 multisig accounts. 1 key on your PC, the other key on your smartphone, and a third key stored on paper in a safe location. Feel free to store your keys anywhere else you think is safe). Interstellar supports multisig accounts.

Finally, there are stellar explorers you can use to track activity using only the public key. (https://stellarchain.io and https://steexp.com). You can also post your public key here on this forum. I, or someone else might help you track where your lumens went to.

        Hi @TonyG
We also tracked the activity of the public key you sent.
We've seen your support mail. It will probably be faster if we continued this discussion over email.

        Hi @fritz,
thanks for your investigation and help to save my funds at my Interstellar.exchange account! Interstellar.exchange is completely secure! It was my mistake to post account secret key to the fake site offer free XLM. Attacker's immediately took my XLM. I'm happy @fritz saved remaining funds of my account. Thanks again! A big painful lesson for me.

        Quick update.

        Interstellar now supports zooming/resolution on our candlestick charts. (1min, 5min, 15min, 1hr, 1day, 1month)

Also, we've made it easier to spot well-known asset issuers by placing their names besides the asset they represent. . E.g. JPY (vcbear)

        Enjoy.
