I am currently working on a standalone device to accept XLM in stores. It's a battery powered device with an e-paper display. A web app is used to enter the amount (in fiat) and to monitor transactions. When the transaction has been confirmed the device informs the customer through it's display. While all elements of the system will be open source and open hardware I might offer a hosted backend when I am done. Very cool idea! So this is similar to Square app that I use when selling my art at festivals? I could use this hardware device to accept Lumens? How does the customer pay, QR code scan?

jeremy82many Yes. It displays a QR code that the customer can scan. I am not sure if that is simple enough though.

albimcleod thank you. While I need to use another library on my tiny embedded chip, I was looking for some information about what data to put in the QR-Code.
The problem I have is more about usability though. There is no wallet for iOS (in the store) that allows scanning QR-Codes and people might not like to keep their funds on a phone. I’ll have to look into it.

Have you tried Centaurus? It says it has iOS support and the android version has a qr reader.

The library I pointed you too has the format if you look into the code, otherwise this is the minimum for mainnet. Works with Stargazer.

After a lot of research I figured that there is no good consumer wallet for iOS. Until there is I don't see a chance for mass adaption. So I decided to extend my portfolio before I even have one and start with a new iOS wallet especially optimized for simplicity. It is (in a way) meant to pay for goods in retail stores.

There's no iOS wallet because Apple has a whitelist of crypto currencies they allow software for, and AFAIK Stellar is not on the list.

Here is my first update:
Rocket Wallet will eventually support QR-Code scanning on iOS, that's why I continue working on the device (I will build a wallet optimized for retail customers later).

The dev board I am using crashes when tryig to validate the stellar Horizon API server (certificate is too big), which means I can not connect to it directly (which was not the plan for the long term, but would have sped up development in the beginning) I started writing the backend in node.js and express.

Hardware cost has been reduced substantially by switching to a color display. I believe power consumption is not a problem for in-store devices.
